Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves not detectable by the human ear. The ultrasound machine emits waves towards the organ to be examined, these waves are reflected into the machine's probe but not completely absorbed by the organ. The resulting "echo" image is then evaluated by a computer and displayed as a two-dimensional image.
This procedure is harmless to the human body, has no known side effects and can be repeated at any time and as often as necessary.
Today, it is the most widely used and fastest diagnostic procedure.
Ultrasound scanning is suitable for the evaluation of the following organs/parts:
- Abdomen and pelvis (liver, gall bladder, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, prostate/ovarian, intestines, lymph nodes, abdominal aorta)
- Cervical soft tissue (thyroid, salivary glands, lymph nodes)
- Veins (Carotid, arteries in upper and lower extremities)
- Soft tissues (skin, hypodermis, muscle, lymph nodes)
Ultrasound scans can detect various diseases including:
- organ size abnormalities
- inflammation
- stone formations
- cysts
- benign and malignant tumours
- vasodilatation and stenosis, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, varicose veins, vascular occlusion)
HOW DOES AN ULTRASOUND SCAN WORK, AND HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR IT?
The examination is performed by an experienced specialist. Usually, no preparation is necessary unless the examination requires it. In such cases, we always inform our patients in advance.
